Born in Ashford, England Ross Allchurch was educated at the Harvey Grammar School in Folkestone before going on to study Music Technology and Music Production in Canterbury. He graduated from the University of Kent, with a First Class B.A. honours degree in Creative Music Production.
He now works as a free-lance composer for film, animation, video games, dance-theatre and even art and photography installations. His compositions span a diverse range of musical styles and genres from classical cinematic orchestral music and avant-garde experimental electronic music to instrumental hip-hop and jazz.
“It’s important to be open minded to working in any musical style, after all you never know what your next job is going to be. One minute you’re writing music for a puzzle game and the next you’re creating an urban dystopian soundtrack for a Dance Theatre company. But that’s all part of the fun. Challenging yourself to do something you’ve never thought of doing before not only expands your repertoire and improves your abilities as a composer but can even change your whole approach to how you go about writing music. It’s all very exciting!”
I started playing the piano when I was four years old. One day, when I was around six, my dad brought home a brand new Atari 1040ST. It came bundle with a whole bunch of old-school video games like Bomb Jack, Outrun, R-Type and Nebulus. At my friend’s suggestion, Double Dragon was the first one in and at that moment I was hooked!
I began writing music at the age of sixteen on that same Atari and have been doing so ever since. It was only natural to want to combine my two favourite things together and start writing music for games and so, in 2011 I started doing just that.
Since then I have branched out into many other areas and now compose music for film, dance, animation and anything else that interests and challenges me.
It’s been an exciting journey so far and I look forward to seeing what other projects come my way in the future.
